Vishwaroop Movie Review (Vishwaroopam Tamil)

Vishwaroop Movie Review

VISHWAROOP starts off with gusto and Kamal Haasan ensures there's hardly any dull moment in the first hour. . But the post-interval portions lose focus. The writing isn't persuasive in this hour, especially towards the middle of the second hour and even otherwise, the narrative seems prolonged towards the concluding stages. On the whole, VISHWAROOP is a Kamal Haasan show all the way. It has an interesting premise, superb combat scenes and Kamal Haasan's bravura act as its three aces. But a stretched second hour and far from dramatic finale dilute the impact. Yet, all said and done, those with an appetite for well-made thrillers might relish this effort!

Vishwaroop has to be admired for its scale and ambition. Director-co-producer, co-writer and hero Kamal Haasan is attempting here to launch a franchise for himself. The film is more Ek Tha Tiger than Zero Dark Thirty but parts of it, especially the beginning and portions in Al Qaeda camps, are engrossing. Kamal Haasan actually attempts to give the terrorists a context. And yet the film is too cartoonish to be taken seriously.Still I think it’s worth watching Vishwaroop just to see Kamal Haasan in form, especially as the effeminate dance teacher. I’m going with three stars.

For a spy thriller that takes bits and pieces from Hollywood hits like True Lies and Indian films like My Name is Khan, Vishwaroopam fails to excite you with its dull pace and insipid action sequences. At times, the film tries to preach what is just and what is unjust, but fails miserably. At other times it subtly tries to spread the universal message that terrorists and terrorism have no religion and succeeds. While it is unfortunate that Vishwaroopam is entangled in a web of controversy, it is equally unfortunate to see Kamal Haasan make a film like Vishwaroopam by pawning all assets he has.

An enigmatic hero engaged in a bitter and dangerous battle of attrition with a particularly devious duo of bad guys – that is essentially the simple premise that Vishwaroop rests on. But trust producer-director-actor Kamal Haasan to serve up the good old filmic formula in a well-mounted cinematic package that lends the largely predictable material an impressive veneer. The magnificently executed espionage thriller pits a Muslim RAW agent against a jihadi sleeper cell that is hatching a plot to detonate a nuclear device in the heart of New York.

Once I was done casting about for things to get offended by, I sat down to watch the film, which turned out to be fairly gripping in true comic-book style, covering such current hot topics like global terrorism, jehadis, Mujahideens, and a few good guys. Not that I didn't sigh impatiently here and there because of some parts being too stretched, or because feeling that it could have finished before it did. But on the whole, once I got past my insistence on realism and wishing it was shorter, I enjoyed the film.

Kamal Haasan is at it again! Having given numerous award winning performances, the South superstar again proves his mettle as a writer, director and actor in Vishwaroop. With a massive budget of 95 Crore, down South the film has already registered itself as the second highest budget flick after Rajnikant’s Robot. An Indian Spy Thriller, the film depicts yet another plot that uses Al Qaeda & similar religion based militant groups in US and changed security policies thereafter, as its theme. Getting down to the nitty-gritty, the film works well and Haasan should be all ready to rake in the moolah.

  2. The movie is good but only in parts. The story line and plot had lot of potential but sadly it is wasted to a great extent. Talent actor like Rahul bose and to a certain extent Shekhar Kapur have not done justice to their roles. The heroine is not as good. A better actress could have added to the value of movie. The movie is completely focussed on Kamal Hasan and he is delivered the goods! Direction is good, Music is not great. Overall the movie is Worth a watch !
