Critics Review: Ek Tha Tiger

Indiaglitz.com - 2.5 Stars
The biggest hurdle that one finds in the entire exercise is the fact that what was expected to be a fusion of good sensibilities (Kabir Khan) and mass offering (Salman Khan) is diluted instead of getting enhanced in 'Ek Tha Tiger'. One can sense that neither of the two could actually go all the way in bringing out their best.

Ek Tha Tiger isn’t what one would rate as great cinema, but it isn’t just harmless fun. The pacifist message dovetailed into its core lends the film a far greater degree of relevance than Bollywood spy thrillers generally strive for. Ek Tha Tiger has enough zing, visual and otherwise, to keep you in your seats for its runtime of a little over two hours.

Salman Khan's performance in 'Ek Tha Tiger' is moody at best. He jumps into the action scenes whole-heartedly but seems lost in the film's dramatic portions, looking subdued even, like the birthday boy who's having no fun at his own party. The romance between him at Katrina Kaif is sweet, but almost awkward – this film could have done with a little more passion between its leads. Katrina, faced with a fair bit of action herself, commits herself to the role, but her character has a cardboardish edge. Despite its obvious flaws, 'Ek Tha Tiger' is far from unwatchable. It's a welcome change from the harebrained films we've seen Salman Khan in lately, and for what it's worth he's playing a character and not himself for a change. The question you have to ask is – Is that enough?

On the whole, EK THA TIGER is a high-octane thriller that works big time. This one has style and substance, both, besides dazzling action, stunning international locales and stylish execution. Most importantly, it has Salman Khan, the trump card of this enterprise. There's no denying that Salman's charisma has resulted in a mind-blowing, astounding, never-seen-before start at the ticket window, but the film's content will sustain it thereafter. The film has long legs to prolong its splendid run. This is, without doubt, Salman's best. Sure shot Blockbuster!

Reviewing a Salman Khan film is like ironing a pair of jeans: really, what’s the point. People will watch it anyway. Filmmakers know this. Having signed up the super-star, they’re left to do precious little besides cash in on the supposed ‘Sal-mania’. At least this Salman film was worth it. For the first time since Chulbul Pandey (Dabangg), the actor's played a character, which to begin with is saying a lot.

The action is riveting, the stunts breathtaking and the plot racy. Where Ek Tha Tiger works is the balancing act - it's a full-blown Hindi film, with desh prem, farz and mohabbat all a part of the recipe. But Kabir Khan treats the film like a stylised Hollywood thriller, never getting into graver issues, but using the set-up as a tool to regale. Ek Tha Tiger, at the end of the day, is an out-and-out Salman Khan film. But it's the rare well-made one. It's escapist, but it has style. Go watch.

What’s Good: The cinematography; some twists in the film; the music.
What’s Bad: The plot seems stretched; unexplained loops.
Loo Break: Not really.
Watch or Not: Watch Ek Tha Tiger for Salman Khan at the top of his game and some exciting action scenes.
Salman Khan is good as Tiger except that his expressions can seem a bit blank at times. Katrina Kaif is lovely as Zoya and smoothly carries off her bubbly and emotional scenes. Though Ranvir Shorey doesn’t have much screen time as Tiger’s comrade Gopi, he is wonderful in his role. Girish Karnad performs well as Tiger’s boss, Shenoy.

Ek Tha Tiger is an underwhelming experience for a neutral party like me. But going by the fact that I heard almost all dialogue and none of it died down with whistles and cheers tells me that would be a fan’s take too. Oh yes, ladies, you do get a glimpse of a shirtless Salman Khan. Fine, gents too.

On the whole, Ek Tha Tiger is a complete pasia vasool treat not only for Salman Khan fans but also for regular movie lovers. Salman in a never before seen role, great locales, suspense elements and sizzling chemistry between the lead pair are the major highlights of the film. Ek Tha Tiger is a edge of the seats thriller which will surely create new records at the box office. What are you waiting for, go grab a ticket and watch Sallu Bhai in this full on action entertainer.

  1. Everyone knew that it was going to take a good opening but I don't trust Salman's movies content-wise. I would just have to be a judge of this movie myself.
