Humshakals Movie Review

Here is the review for the movie Humshakals. Watch out this space for more updates!

Humshakals is an execrable comedy of horrors that plumbs the depths of stupidity and crassness. If there is any purpose that this load of unalloyed trash serves, it is simply this: the film proves how delusional Sajid Khan is.Humshakals (screenplay: Robin Bhatt, Sajid Khan and Akarsh Khurana) makes a complete mockery of the medium. It operates on the principle that a mindless mad hatters' party can be mined for laughs over a runtime of 160 minutes if three sets of lookalikes are thrown into the equation and a wild goose chase is orchestrated. Not a fraction of the film (story and dialogue: who else but Sajid Khan?) comes remotely close to being funny. Heed the warning: Humshakals is infinitely more insufferable. Even if you possess plenty of himmat, use it elsewhere.

Humshakals looks exactly similar to Sajid's earlier films like Housefull 2 — with a farcical plot based in foreign locations and amazingly dim-witted comedy. As far as performances are concerned, Riteish is the one who might be of some interest in the film, followed by Ram Kapoor. Despite all odds, Riteish seems to pull off the gag-act perfectly. Ram does a decent job of playing the mean mama - KANS, and he has his moments. Saif is the worst of all — he is unconvincing as the man behaving as a dog, as the waitress. Just about everything he does in the movie is like he's just sleep-walking. With no story or comedy on offer, even Riteish and Ram are unable to save the day for Sajid Khan. Skip this movie if you do not want a bad headache and other after-effects of being tortured.

Humshakals is the lowest form of buffoonery I have seen this year. It would have been way more harsh if Ram & Riteish were missing from the film. Loaded with indecipherable dim wit, the film is an odd mishmash of pathos and drudgery. Unfunny and strictly for juvenile, I am gonna take the day off to decide whether Himmatwala was better than this. Meanwhile, stick to FIFA and stay away from the cinemas.

From past experience, you have to go into a Sajid Khan film wondering just how much of a dip there can be. This one is beyond. Idiocy is a gentle term for what is unleashed upon us. You can also call it a two-and-a- half hour showreel of plot-less, witless, joyless offensiveness. I am all for political incorrectness. Silliness can be great fun. Brainless doesn’t have to translate to brain-dead, when it is done with smarts. `Humshakals’ has zero. Even in his really terrible moments, Sajid has managed to come up with one laugh out loud moment. Or two. Here there are none.

Saif Ali Khan, Riteish Deshmukh and Ram Kapoor are stupendously bad. Bipasha, Tamannah and Esha were signed only to strut and smile. They fail miserably at that too. For Sajid Khan, I can only say that Humshakals will be listed in one of the worst films of the century. Watch Humshakals only if you want to test your patience.

The only actor who emerges with some grace out of the ungainly mess that is Humshakal is Riteish Deshmukh. The script he's given doesn't allow him to be genuinely funny, but he manages to eke out a few microseconds of humour. In contrast Saif Ali Khan, the star of the film, is painfully awkward and entirely out of place in Sajid Khan's world. If you're thinking of watching Humshakals, here's a suggestion. Don't do it. There are better things you can do with your money and being swallowed alive by a python is less excruciating than watching Sajid Khan's latest attempt at making a movie.

“My three-year-old niece cracks better jokes than this,” an English woman tells her friend barely few minutes into the movie, and that pretty much sums up Sajid Khan’s attempt at comedy. He packs in a bunch of old school PJs (poor jokes), hires three good-looking women and three men, who triple up into various shapes, sizes and hair-dos, to tickle us over two-hour-and-a-half-hours of screen time. So, if you thought Sajid’s ‘Himmatwala’ was the worst movie ever in Bollywood, then you are wrong. The title has now been handed over to his latest attempt at slapstick comedy.

If you are willing to suspend belief for nearly three hours, then this mad bunch may make your day. But for others, it’s just torturous. At some point in the movie, we saw a DVD of Himmatwala (Sajid’s recent box-office debacle) being displayed as a weapon of torture for mentally unstable inmates who break hospital rules. Shouldn’t Humshakals feature on that list too?

Humshakals could be one of those classic cases of the after party being a little better than the real party. Because after 159 minutes of, let’s not get into what that was, it’s the behind-the-scenes shots that actually make you laugh, if at all. There’s a scene that shows Ram Kapoor trying to get fresh with Riteish and the latter retorts saying, “Mujhe toh laga ke Ram ko bade acche lagte hai”. This might sound the crassiest joke in the universe, but when the rest of the film has fed you cocaine and vodka parathas, you WILL laugh at this one. Lastly, let’s pray that Sajid’s Prince Charles, who has a tiny role in the film, never sees Humshakals. Because when the climax is enacted in a tacky recreation of the House of Commons, (yes, you heard it right), Prince Charles says, “My first marriage made more sense than this.” At this point you wish those vodka parathas were real.

HUMSHAKALS belongs to Riteish, who proves, yet again, that he has an incredible timing for comedy. Watch him in all three roles and you'd agree, he adds so much to the sequences. Saif steps into a new territory with this one, but there are times when he looks out of place completely. Ram Kapoor too gets to portray parts that demand him to go over the top and the actor does complete justice to them. The leading ladies -- Bipasha, Tamannaah and Esha Gupta -- are pure eye candies. They don't get much screen time actually. Satish Shah is hilarious and brings the house down. Nawwab Shah is efficient, as always. Chunkey Pandey is wasted. Ditto for Aakash Khurana and Suresh Menon. Darshan Jariwala is alright. On the whole, HUMSHAKALS tries too hard to make you laugh, but fails miserably.

  2. Ironically, the movie grossed 12 crores on the first day. Go figure. The Lunchbox didn't earn half of it. Indians really love torture.

I am glad this film flopped. Slap in Sajid's face. And Bipasha, yes please don't work with Vashu Bhagnani because he has no money to produce or to provide a paycheck! Ha ha ha!!! Karma gets back to people like these!!! Sajid - joker of the century! Saif, even big joker for signing this film!
