Arjun Kapoor gets a few endearing moments when he's playing off his leading lady. For the rest of the film, he wears a puppy dog look, trapped between the girl he loves and the mother who's dead against her. Not surprisingly, it's Alia Bhatt who is the best thing in the film, sliding into the part with complete ease. She's natural and charming without having to try too hard. Parental opposition is one of the oldest conflicts as far as love stories go. Sure, the culture clash here gives us some genuine laughs. But at 2 hours and 30 minutes, this is a long, indulgent film that wears you out. I'm going with two-and-a-half out of five for 2 States. I've never rooted so hard for a couple to get married. If only so I could go home.

In the second half, 2 States falls apart. It becomes more contrived and unconvincingly twisted. At almost two and a half hours, it’s also stretched so thin that by the time Krish and Ananya walk into the sunset, you are long past caring. The story is narrated by Krish to a psychiatrist but at some point the lady disappears. What exactly happened here? I’m still trying to figure it out. Ultimately 2 States is unwieldy and disappointing. I’m going with two and a half stars.

2 States' romantic angle is a little difficult to connect given the way it is moved along in such a hurry in order to incorporate everything, but the family side of the bargain is truly touching. I ended up crying at least thrice in the film. Nevertheless, there's nothing that should keep you from watching 2 States. If you're as desi as I am and get senti about maa, there's no way you won't run home after watching this film and give your mother a big hug.

Designed as an autobiographical tale of North Indian author Chetan Bhagat's love story with his Tamilian wife, this film is a bafflingly superficial adaptation of a book that should have remained a book. One of the less dated facts this film gets right is that a writer often gets inspired by pain. 'Two States', the book, was a result of momentary heartbreak too. As is this review.

Incidentally, for those in an inter-caste marriage, this movie could resonate like your own tale. The playful digs at each other's cultures, the self-deprecating remarks about one's family and community are all laugh-out-loud moments. Amrita-Ronit, Revathi-Shiv Subramaniam infuse life into their roles of the Punjabi and Tamil parents. The spitfire Alia and a sober Arjun are also lovable. If you are in a mood for a Bollywood family saga with measured melodrama and the right amount of naach-gaana, visit 2 States.

All in all, the second half of the drama definitely scores over the first half and completely entertains the audience. The look and feel of the film is very city-centric which is why it would appeal more to the audience in the big cities and those frequenting multiplexes. On the whole, 2 States is an entertaining love story which will definitely work at the box-office – more in the cities and with the multiplex audience. The film’s distributors and exhibitors will all make decent profits in the film.

2 STATES is one of the finest movies to come out of the Hindi film industry of late. This is one of those rare Hindi movies that commands a repeat viewing. Strongly recommended!

Abhishek Varman has done total justice to Chetan Bhagat's book and delightfully taken it. With the soundtrack incredibly gelling with the film, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy have done wonderful work. 2 States is a total entertainer and a sure shot Bollywood box office hit!

The unabashed shallowness of a Chetan Bhagat book meets the inane glitter of a Karan Johar-Sajid Nadiadwala production in 2 States. The result is the creation of a third state – the state of overpowering indolence. If the inordinate length of 2 States isn’t bad enough, its soporific tempo certainly is. 2 States is a cross-culture love story that strives to be sweet, funny and emotionally wrenching all at once. It is occasionally funny and sweet in parts all right, but the family drama at the film’s core has a severely stultified feel.2 States is good for a one-time watch.

The film sets out to be a solid, emotionally satisfying rom com, and goes well for a bit but then turns into a too-stretched-out ‘jhagda’ between the two sets of North-South parents. And the romance gets short shrift. The smooth, engaging first half descends, post-interval, into mopey melodrama, and I got impatient waiting for the inevitable resolution. Get the outdated folks out of the way, make it crisper, and show us what Krish and Ananya did next. I’m waiting.

Two world, two cultures, two families, one love story...."2 States" re-defines and rejuvenates the love-marriage space.Simple and yet striking, gorgeous and graceful, this is a film where we come away hankering to know what happens to the couple after the film is over. "2 States" creates a world where characters don't shout to be heard. They just belong to a world where being proper, politically or otherwise, is not always a pre-condition.

The best thing about Two States is that it is fresh -- in the casting, the approach, and the language. It's the kind of romcom that makes you go 'hmmm' rather than 'awwww.' The language spoken by all the characters is no different from one used by everyday people, and it's not like actors saying lines. From the make-out scenes to the fights between the couple, it's all very life-like and non-filmi. The good thing is that it shows the language of love as it is today. Not the Bollywood version of it, which is totally unrelatable. In the end, Two States is more meaningful for what it does (hopefully changing mindsets) rather than for what it is about -- a story of one couple. The first half is light and breezy and the second dramatic and emotional, perhaps a better balance would have helped the post interval portion which seems heavy.

With ‘2 States’, both Varman and writer Bhagat himself, have proven that a good film in Bollywood does not have to be loud and slapstick with stellar music and A-list stars, but that script and good direction is still king at the movies. For the duo, the foot tapping music and a cast of actors that know their job, are simply the added bonus to watch ‘2 States’ in a happy state of mind.

A big shout-out to him for matching up to the beloved character brought alive by Bhagat in the book. It’s not often that a film is as enjoyable as the book. But like most of Bhagat’s novels — the book equivalent of eating a tub of popcorn — they are fun to eat (or watch in this case), but are easily forgettable. Credit here goes to Kapoor for making it more memorable. He makes his character stand out without shedding shirts or flashing an oil-slick torso (remember Gunday?). Don’t skip this if you have a thing for happily-ever-after endings.

On one hand you could probably call 2 States better than most of Chetan Bhagat based movies, because it has a nifty concept. On the other (more accurate) hand you could probably call 2 Statesworse than most of Bhagat’s flicks, because it takes such a potentially clever concept and does nothing with it but involve stereotype jokes, lame romance, and really limp melodrama. Dharma’s trademark visual style and a few moments of comedy aside, 2 States is mostly a chore and periodically infuriating. The filmmakers had a chance to go against all odds and make a classic and they blew it. Critical appreciation might not be the film’s target anyway, because it’s been marketed well enough to make a truckload of money.

2 States is a feel good, romantic comedy which scores for being earthly and grounded. It is never too candyfloss but even with a known, loved and inevitable climax, Abhishek Varman spins an engaging story. Alia and Arjun’s unfeigned and spunky chemistry is winsome but mostly the film is watchable because of its ability to portray known dynamics of culture divide without many glitches. It is easy, breezy and good fun! 2 states is barely unwatchable but misses the magic of Chetan Bhagat’s novel. As a stand alone, it is endearingly done with Alia and Arjun’s scorching chemistry coming off as adorable. Despite a half baked soul, this movie is worth the price of your popcorn.

  1. review: Be ready for some torture with some cute scenes here and there for the 16 year old girls and a couple of jokes by the parents in the movie. People who have read the book will be slightly disappointed with this Dharma production I feel. Especially when you compare it to 3 Idiots and Kai Po Che. I feel that when I watch the movie I see more of Karan Johar and the typical Dharma touch in , more than Abhishek Verman's own touch to it. I expected a far more earthier story. This could have been such a great film with such a great message to unite Indian even more. The film is based only on Alia and Arjun and you miss the family from time to time who are the only good actor in the movie. It has it's share of kissing and sex scenes so for the prudish people here it's gonna be a little bit disappointing. Alia and Arjun fall in love, songs are played, there is sex, kissing etc. they fall in love they want to get married. Boring. Now the family has a problem because they are from north and south. Unfortunately after a few jokes here and there the movie becomes very cliche. There are funny scenes, but nothing innovative, a new take on the issue or any sort of creativity to come up with other jokes than most Indians have heard in their day-to-day lives. The typical Bollywood movie where the parents are against a marriage. And even the portrayal of South Indians and North Indians is very superficial and the story doesn't go deeper. Both cultures are not well presented. It's more about the songs, the never ending crying and glitter and glam. You will get to see big songs, but Alia can't emote well here. She is too focussed on trying to act well. It doesn't look natural at all. Arjun looks rather lazy in the movie. In the running scenes he doesn't look the least convincing. If you love someone that much it should show in your face, your eyes etc. As someone in the audience you don't even care if they come back together or not because they are not even that much in love it seems even though they tried to show 'modern' India by having some sex scenes here and there. A movie on a simple and interesting issue in India is turned into a no story. I read some other reviews and they said Alia is an Director's actress and I guess that is true. This performance was mediocre at best. I said it before and now have the proof. These reviews are fake and paid for.Kjo Aunty needs to improve the movies he produces. Not good enough. It's like I'm watching the same movies over and over again from his production company. I would give it a maximum of 2/5 stars.

it opened well at the box office, that doesn't mean its a good film, Rajeev and anupama gave it 2 half stars and said it was boring.
