Yaariyan talks about a whole lot of other things – friendship, trust, patriotism, race attacks and tolerance – but makes no sense at all. It would make perfect sense to give this film a miss.

There is no valid reason for you to watch Divya Khosla Kumar’s Yaariyan. It is dull, boring, pathetic and doesn’t seem to get over. Have you ever tried Indian, Italian, American, Continental cuisines all together in the same evening? Trust me the film was a pathetic variation of the same and believe my word, it was a cinematic acidity of sorts which plagues the viewers. Filmmakers please show some respect for the wit of your viewers and your craft and spare us the horror of such movies.

The biggest drawback of the film is that there is no surprise element. Within first 15 minutes, you will be able to easily predict the entire story. In the end you will proudly say, “dekha manine kaha than na.” But remember your movie companion will also reply, “mujhe bhi pta tha.” No doubt, the movie has been shot in some beautiful locations, but the bad plot has spoilt everything. The film is so fast paced that it fails to establish a connect with the audience.Emotional scenes are unintentionally funny. Don’t blame yourself if you start laughing on scenes which are not funny. There is a desperate attempt to evoke the patriotic feeling, but there is no spark.

The first half of YAARIYAN has its moments of fun, although the narrative tends to go astray at times. If one were to pinpoint the deficiencies, the romance between the professors appears forced in the narrative. The humor/liveliness also dries up after a point and one feels that the first half -- which commenced with lively and funny moments -- could've been succinct by at least 10/15 minutes. On the whole, YAARIYAN has a gripping second half, smash hit musical score and the youthful romance that should lure and entice its target audience -- the youth. A treat for youngsters and young at heart!

Yaariyan was supposed to be about friendship and young love but how it turned into a film about pseudo-desh bhakti. The hypersexualization of college girls -- or rather, every female except for the mothers of the two heroes -- and the casual 'boys will be boys' attitude of the film, the message it gives young people about life and relationships is appalling. Yaariyan may be targeted at a young audience but every single teenager who chooses to watch it will be insulting their own intelligence.

'Yaariyan’ is meant to be many things as we keep discovering as we are dragged along its unending length. A youthful college film. A patriotic film that waves the Indian flag in faraway Australia and our own Sikkim. A love story with a fresh pair. And a container for some popular songs. Of all the boxes it tries to tick, this exhausting two-and-a-half hour product does best with the last one. Because for the others, there needed to have been a plot. Which is non-existent. They should have just compiled the songs, a couple of them hummable, in a CD, instead.

Yaariyan is a tailor made recipe for the teens, or those who have stacks of Pretty Little Liars, Gossip Girl DVDs lined up on their shelf. A story of five friends who fight racism in Australia and battle it out at a talent championship to save their college, Yaariyan has only one big trump card – its music. The casting is stereotypical and adult jokes and sexual innuendos have been inserted to cater to those battling puberty blues. Strictly for those who want to enjoy the songs on the big screen, the rest can go revisit Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander the best college campus film of all time!

'Grease' was the word. Helping hormone-rushed youngsters slide into puberty and outta tight-fitting pants. 'Yaariyan' could have been the word. About friends, first-kisses and hot flushes. Peppered with candy-crushes and teenage desires furthest from reality. So we have Bettys and Veronicas crushing on extra-smiley Archies, all the while shaking their 'toohs' and 'tees' (beep, beep!) at beach parties. Of course, with thoda ambition, kuch-kuch competition, and mostly out-of-classroom lessons.'Yaariyan' is nothing to gush about, but the teenies can watch this one for a lark...and some yo-yo beats!

On the whole, the movie is a messy hodge-podge of lust, girls, songs and more girls, without any story or so. Had it not been the fear of Censor Board of Film Certification, the makers would have surpassed even Grand Masti, in terms of vulgarity/crudity. Shame on Divya Khosla Kumar! Neither her direction nor her choreography (she had choreographed five songs) have the potential to offer something out-of-the-box and that too with supreme proud & confidence. Direction/Story cum screenplay writing is not your cup of tea Mrs. Kumar. A ham-fisted affair!

Yaariyan is an entirely disappointing film. The characters are flawed, and the acting is fake. There's not story or plot in the film. This college in Sikkim has five young kids. The boys just have the one dream of gaining access to the girls' hostel and kissing a girl. Mind you, before heading out there, the hero even takes the permission of his aunt and the girls' hostel's warden. Trouble comes in the form of a company wanting to build a casino on the spot where the college now stands. The challenge is to win five competitions, between the Australians and the college kids.
Lots of action, lost of attempt to create drama, and not-so-great dialogues take over the movie. Avoid watching the film.
