Special 26 Movie Reviews

Here are the movie reviews for Special 26 starring Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Manoj Bajpayee and Kajal Aggarwal:

Rating: 4/5 Review by: Taran Adarsh Site: Bollywood Hungama

SPECIAL 26 may be a fictionalized account of events that occurred in the 1980s, but Neeraj ensures it does not transform into a dry film/documentary that focuses completely and absolutely on the incidents. The film has the soul of a thriller and the director makes sure that it not only enlightens [to the present-day viewer], but entertains as well. While the volatile plot and enthralling drama catches your attention, the execution of the written material, besides proficient performances from each and every member of the cast, makes SPECIAL 26 a game changer, a worthy follow up to the director's A WEDNESDAY.
On the whole, SPECIAL 26 is an intelligently woven, slick and smart period thriller with its subject matter as its USP. It's sure to get listed as one of the most gripping heist dramas based on real life occurrences. A film that's sure to win accolades, acclaim and awards. Also, box-office rewards!

Akshay Kumar shifts gears and opts for a subtle, more intelligent make-over, instead. And, it works. Stupendously. His attention to detail is admirable, with each frame meticulously designed to capture the 1980s. The humour is pitched perfectly, without any unnecessary buffoonery that Bollywood has slowly turned accustomed to. Despite some obvious shortfalls, that occur when the sensibilities of commercial and realistic cinema are fused, Neeraj does pull it off, fairly impressively.

After a remarkable debut with the political thriller ‘A Wednesday’, Neeraj follows it up with a notable ‘Special 26’.

Pandey’s new film “Special 26″, a heist drama, does not quite hit the bull’s eye — with an insipid love story and a forgettable “item number” playing spoilsport.
Pandey was bold enough to make “A Wednesday” without a 20-something woman as eye candy, but he disappoints the second time around.
“Special 26″ is not a bad film. It keeps the audience engaged. Sadly, it could have been much better.

Rating: 3.5/5 Review by: Madhureeta Mukherjee Site: Times of India

Inspired by a real incident, Neeraj Pandey cuts to the chor-police chase and weaves an intelligent, mind-racing thriller, keeping you tightly strapped to your seats. It captures the 80's era beautifully; and the cinematography is a cut above. The powerful background score enthuses the pace. The only place he loses momentum is the romantic track and dance number, kinda unwarranted, we must say.
Interestingly, this con-job story is not superbly-stylish or stealthily serious. It doesn't stun you with a social message like Pandey's 'A Wednesday', but it grips, excites and ahh...climaxes too! And no ... you can't fake this one! Catch it for pure cinematic orgasm.

Rating: 4/5 Review by: Saibal Chatterjee Site: NDTV

Special 26 is actually quite a long film – it is a shade under two and a half hours. But it feels much shorter than it really is. It glides by with such effortlessness that it leaves behind no unsightly footmarks.
Special 26 is an intelligently scripted, superbly acted, enthralling and believable heist film that is more than just that.
Verdict: Special 26 truly special. Not be missed.

Writer-director Neeraj Pandey (A Wednesday) makes a taut, suspenseful thriller weaving in intermittent humour.
Watch the film for the arresting story served up in a fun, frothy style. Recommended!
