Aiiyya vs SOTY vs English Vinglish- Which Movie Has Created The ‘Buzz’ Online?


Google Trends is a useful tool provides information about how often a particular topic is searched on Google over a period of time. The tool helps compare not just search volumes but also the news reference volumes over time. How often is a topic in the news? Which news release coincided with the spike in search volumes? Is there a ‘buzz’ around the topic online? You can find answers to these questions with the help of Google Trends.


If Google Trends is used as the benchmark, then there is no doubt that Student of the Year(SOTY) has outpaced Aiyyaa and English Vinglish in creating a ‘buzz’ amongst fans before its release.

Data for the last 30 days shows that SOTY received higher search volumes as compared to the other movies despite the fact that news reference volume was at par with Aiyyaa and English Vinglish. SOTY enjoys the advantage of being a youth oriented movie with a wider appeal.

Between Aiyyaa and English Vinglish, the latter dawdled behind English Vinglish but picked up speed by end of first week of September and has become more popular than EV in the second half of the month.

Rani & Sridevi have their own fan base and this seems to have made a huge impact. Sridevi’s TIFF visit, the buzz about Dreamum Wakepum and other such juicy tidbits have spiked the interest of fans and critics alike.

Of course, mere high search and news reference volumes do not mean the movie will be successful. However, it will significantly increase the chances of the movie enjoying good word of mouth publicity as seen with Barfi.
