When actor Aishwarya Rai Bachchan delivered a baby girl on Wednesday, she made a powerful statement: One is never too posh to push or too old for a natural delivery. The 38-year-old former Miss World won accolades from various city doctors for her feat at a time when every fourth woman in Mumbai undergoes a Caesarean section delivery instead of a natural one.Among women who are over 35 years of age, this statistic gets more skewed: one survey said 60% of them opted for a surgical delivery.
Sometimes,an older mother is not given a choice by the doctor on whether she would like to deliver normally. It is taken for granted that older women should have Caesarean deliveries, said Dr Nozer Sheriar, president of the Mumbai Obstetrics and Gynecological Society. But he felt this could change, thanks to Aishwarya. Now mothers-to-be will be aware of what they can and should do, he said.
Dr Kiran Coelho, who heads Lilavatis gynaecology department, felt the actor should be held up as a role model for all moms-to-be.With adequate ante-natal preparation and motivation, most women irrespective of their age can deliver their babies naturally.
Its a bold step on the part of two bold women, said Dr Firuza Parikh of Jaslok, adding that Dr Vinita Salvi of Seven Hills Hospital is among those excellent obstetricians who can ensure a normal delivery in most cases.
Its a generalization that has become the buzzword in medical circles : Too posh to push.Studies have shown that todays woman with her low threshold for pain is more likely than her mother to opt for a C-section.

  1. As an MBBS student, what Aishwarya has done definitely deserves praise! She could have opted for a painfree C-section or epidurals or painkillers, but she chose to go the natural way.

She deserves everything she got because she works hard for it! No wonder people who saw the baby cant stop gushing about how angelic she looks. All the pain is worth it for having an angel like her. WAY TO GO AISHWARYA!!

  3. I am a big fan of ash -abhi, but this time, I agree with makeup critic. If it needs to be clarified, it should be done from abhishek's end, not amitabh's. He is just too much into abhi-ash's personal lives

  6. Is she the 1st woman to give birth?
thousands of women in India give birth without even basic necessities. nobody talks about their problems.
Ash gives birth in a superb hospital with all facilities and she is being praised as if she won the war or something

  7. who cares if she had a C section or a normal delivery? the way she got admitted to the hospital, her age, etc makes us think it was C section. but its none of our business

  9. Kudos to Aishwarya! Common people look up to celebrity persons, you have set a good trend in this important issue of each and every family. God has created women with a gut feeling to face such pains, very natural for any delivery of a sibling. we need not know the background, we ned to admire her and members of her family for this bold decision. Congrats to doctors who handled the situation. As a statistician I than for this statistics, let more and more such statistics be brought out for awareness building in our society.
