Frieda Pinto's Miral Receives Mostly Negative Reviews

Miral starring Frieda Pinto was released in the United States March 25, 2011. It has received negative reviews from critics. Miral is the story of a Palestinian girl who lives in an orphanage and later visits a refuge camp and is exposed to the plight of Palestinian refugees.

Here are a few excerpts from reviews:

From the Associated Press: "Schnabel's attempt at depicting this longtime, bloody friction from the Palestinian point of view -- and with a conciliatory tone -- is admirable; if only it had been more compelling."

From NYT: "Like so many other well-intentioned movies about politically contentious issues, it is hobbled by its own sincerity and undone by a confused aesthetic agenda."

From New York Daily News: "The film seeks to humanize a seemingly unwinnable conflict, and it succeeds at that. But stepping back sadly weakens its story as well as its politics"

It has also received some positive reviews:

From the Independent: "The strength and importance of Miral lies in its vantage point. Schnabel is offering viewers a perspective on the Middle East that they are unlikely to have seen before in other mainstream movies."

Frieda's acting has gotten mixed reviews as well with Guardian claiming she "looks uneasy and miscast" while the Independent claims "Miral herself is played very engagingly by Freida Pinto as a mischievous and idealistic teenager with an acute sense of natural justice."

So Pinkvilla, has anyone seen the movie? What were you thoughts?

ETA: It has a 21% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. I would call that mostly negative.
