Sonakshi Sinha upsets her pakistani Cricket fans!

Sonakshi Sinha recently angered her pakistani fans by posting the following picture on her twitter account

Showing pakistani sportman Shaid Afridi getting wacked by Virender Sehwag. She added the caption:
'De ghumaaaaake! Hehehehahahaha.'

This upset some of her pakistani fans. Many tweeted telling her to be a goodwill ambassador between the two countries and learn a few things from Salman Khan. Some of them even unfollowed her on twitter. To which Sonakshi tweeted; 'pak fans v upset. jung ke maidan mein ladne se toh accha hi hai khel ke maidan mein ladein! im all for love thy neighbour. be a sport yaar.' and later deleted the picture. she replied to her upset fans by saying 'was all done in good humor. and if people dont understand that...its really not my fault'

A few days later she posted on her twitter 'no jokes today. too many people here without a sense of humour. boo.'

What is your opinion on this? do you think she went too far? should she just apologise?

I personally feel that she should just apologise straight up. Imagine if the picture was reversed and how upset indian fans would have been? I feel it was insensitive and as a public figure she needs to be careful not to ruin relationships with pakistani people. She should learn from more seasoned actors/actresses like SRK who celebrate without humiliating anyone and never try to upset their fans.

Let me know your opinions (and please no anti-indian or anti-pakistani comments please, lets try to remain PC)......

  1. Well, she obviously didn't know it was going to be a big mess. But she has a lot to learn, she's still new. Bollywood films are watched all over the world, not just India. It's watched especially a lot by Pakistan and Bangladesh audiences too. So, I think, as a public figure/celebrity, they shouldn't make jokes that can hurt others' sentiments. Then again, people really don't have a sense of humor these days; they get offended over the smallest things, and this wasn't so small since Pakistan-India relations have always been precarious.

  2. Why should she apologize? How many of the pakistanis who come to this board apologized for what happened in Mumbai on 11/26/2008? Easy to go after a celebrity isn't it?

  3. Interesting discussion. She probably didn't anticipate the impact of uploading a picture like this going by her unprofessional response, which could've been maturer considering her family's political/BJP ties. Rooting for your team is one thing, but it was the nature of the picture - glorifying physical blows to an individual who is screaming 'Allah' - that people presumably found offensive/tasteless. I don't know if she uploaded similar images when India played other countries, but if she didn't, singling out Pakistan is bound to evoke emotional reactions especially when cricket is being used to strengthen diplomacy efforts.

I've noticed that for people on both sides, cricket is often an outlet to vent political opinions. Ironically, love of one's own country is often expressed as hatred of the other, just as victory is contingent upon humiliation of the other. Nationalism - the sentiment that one's country is superior to all others - tends to be aggressive in nature. I guess there was a reason George Orwell said "nationalism is the worst enemy of peace."

Speaking of the pitfalls of nationalistic chest-thumping, check this out. In response to a reporter who asked Afridi how the Pakistani team should psychologically prepare for the next match against India after their loss in the semi-finals, Afridi had this to say : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R9WluZaezg

On a positive note, I think it's awesome that South Asians have dominated the World Cup this year. Anyone but the firangs, seriously. Go India and Sri Lanka!

  5. Hope she can have a sense of humour when people start morphing pictures of her she find offensive.

Maybe she also forgot that not everyone she represents to sell their product to the masses like this kind of fun and game or childish behavior not to mention big fat ego.

Just reading her tweets shows how much this 23yrs old woman needs to mature.

Growing up we are taught to say please, thank you and sorry.
As adult we forget all these things, cross the line with an attitude and expect fragile feelings not to get hurt.

I make no excuses for anyone, myself included when we can't leave our egos aside and share in the joys of life together.
